Surface mounted device. Surface mount devices(SMD) are components that are made in small tablets,they are smaller in size than normal components. SMD are use in making portable electronics like smart phones, calculators, remote controls etc.
So in this tutorial we will take a brief look at types of surface mount devices.
Types Of SMD Components.
All SMD are grouped into;
1.passive components:
These are components that Doesn't require external power source to power them before doing their specified work,they are listed as follows.
(a) SMT resistors
they are electrical devices that resists the flow of current,their ability to resist current is called resistance and is measured in ohms. This type of resistors resistance value are usually calculated from numbers printed on them.Some resistors are left blank because they are not easy to print at due to their small sizes,so their resistance value are usually calaculated by using a multimeter.
When excess current flows through them in a circuit they melt and there is circuit breakage.It prevents circuits from recieving over voltage which could cause heating and explosion.
Fuse was invented by Thomas edision in 1890.
(c) SMT inductors. inductors are devices use for storing current in form of electromagnetic field,they are used to stabilize flunctating DC current and are made from copper coils wound around a ferrite bead.
Inductance is the effect resulting from electromagnetic field around inductors when current is passed through them which resists a change in current in a circuit.
Inductance is measured in henries.
There are of two types namely: polarized and non polarized.They are both used in storing current in form of charges,polarized are used in large voltage situations while non polarized are used in low voltage.
They are semiconductors used in switching, amplification and generation of electromagnetic feild.
They consists of at least three pins for connecting to an external circuit,this pins are namely base,collector and emmiter.
Are two terminal material that allows current to flow in one direction,they becomes non-conductor when connected to a power source and a load in reverse bais,and conducts smoothly and fine when in forward bias.
Also known as light emmiting diodes.they are diodes that produce light when only in forward bias,they can be manufactured to produce green,blue,yellow,white,voilet and red light and they are widely used in electronics indicators.One of their very good advantage is that they don't consume much electricity and can be powered with low voltage than a filament bulb.
2 Active components;
They constantly need a power source to keep them alive e.g.
they are very tiny metalic semiconductor which consists of thousands of components like resistors, diodes,etc.They used for logical calculations, oscillation, controls,CPU of laptops smartphones etc.
Examples of ICs are 555 timer which is the most common type.
